Hillsville, VA -- Police were investigating a possible kidnapping in Carroll County, VA, after they found a note from a child claiming to be missing.
But now, they're saying the whole thing was a hoax.
Capt. Jason Hawks said he received a call from a Quality Inn employee who said housekeeping found a handwritten note from a child, claiming to be missing.
The note said, "missing and the cops are looking for me," according to a news release.
Police say they searched local, state and national databanks for the child, but there are no records of a missing person by the name Jasmine Hines.
Investigators had a suspect in the possible kidnapping.
Pierre Morand of Lachute, Quebec, checked into the hotel on Nov. 28 and rented a one-person room. Police say surveillance shows Morand walking in with a younger girl.
Morand later checked out of the hotel and left in a white mini-van with two bicycles on a rack on the back.
The FBI found all the persons involved. They are not investigating a kidnapping.
Police say Morand is a retired fire chief and currently lives in Florida. He and his wife stayed in Hillsville on their way back from Canada.
