Elon, NC -- Byron Pitts, 60 minutes contributor, and chief national correspondent for the CBS Evening News, spoke to students and faculty at Elon University Thursday night. The lecture was titled: "We Are Tough and Delicate Creatures". In it, he compared other parts of the world where disaster, both human and man-made, have tested the human spirit.
He talked about the importance of communication skills, his personal connection to the university, and encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunities they're presented with while they're at the university.
He also told them about a conversation he had with Dan Rather before he left for Afghanistan. He said Rather told him to sit down and write letters to his family, in case he didn't return. Pitts said Rather told him if he could write the letters, they would send him overseas. If he couldn't, then he wasn't ready to go.
He also encouraged students to be of service to others in the world and in their own community.
