High Point, NC -- All week, 2 Wants to Know has been talking about pets, and while all animals are special, some have special abilities.
Becca Hart, the reigning Miss High Point Teen USA, and her service dog "MH Vision Mike" joined Frank Mickens in the WFMY News 2 weather garden.
On the outside, Becca looks like your average teenage beauty queen. But she needs Mike. She had heart problems at the age of 12 and at the age 15, doctors diagnosed her as having Lupus. She's home schooled because of immune issues, and she still has heart problems. Enter Mike, the Greyhound. He can detect an irregular heartbeat. According to Becca's mom, Tonya, he's the only greyhound in the U.S. trained to do so. He's trained to make a very distinct noise to alert to any problems. Tonya also says Mike can sense other people's pain.
Becca started participating in pageants to get the word out about service animals and change people's perceptions about people with disabilities. She's now Miss High Point Teen USA and might be the first contestant in the Miss U.S.A Organization with a service animal. She has an organization called Harts 2 Paws and their mission is to address the needs of children, teens and others who have challenges in this world such as Autoimmune Diseases, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety or any other medical or mental that have a service animal or may need one as a tool to navigate this world.
Becca has had the opportunity to meet Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and several other people.
