Raleigh, N.C. -- Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue has won the endorsement of perhaps the most famous lawman in North Carolina, "Sheriff Andy Taylor."
North Carolina native Andy Griffith appears in a television ad that began airing Wednesday. The actor said he supports Perdue in her bid to become the state's next governor. Griffith played Taylor in the popular 1960s sitcom, "The Andy Griffith Show."
Griffith praises Perdue for her "vision, strength" and "honesty" and cites her endorsements from teachers, police officers, "and of course, sheriffs." Perdue also appears in the commercial.
Griffith's involvement in gubernatorial races isn't new. He participated in ads for Mike Easley in 2000 and 2004. This time, he decided to get involved in the primary, choosing Perdue over State Treasurer Richard Moore.
North Carolina's primary in May 6.
