WFMY News 2 is a station that focuses on serving the community. With every story we cover on the air and online at www.digtriad.com, we constantly ask ourselves if we are serving the viewers? and users? needs. This community-based journalism is the driving force behind many of the station?s strongest franchises such as 2 Wants to Know, 2 Your Health, 2 Those Who Care, School Solutions, Money Matters, Restaurant Report Card, and Call for Action.
Viewers see our WFMY News 2 team in the public throughout the year participating in events to help the community. Our Food 2 Families event collects tens of thousands of pounds of food each year to feed the hungry. And our Tools for Schools project provides 30,000+ students per year with basic supplies to help them succeed in school. We believe in serving the people of the Triad and this belief truly governs the decisions we make as a local information center.
Station History: WFMY News 2 got its start as an FM radio station in 1948. At the time, there were only 66 commercial FM stations operating in the U.S. A year later, when an estimated 1,200 homes out of 226,500 in the Greensboro market had a TV set, the station aired its first live TV broadcast. That August 18th newscast lasted 4 minutes, 25 seconds. Until October 1950, approximately 40 percent of all WFMY-TV?s program time originated ??live?? from WFMY?s studios.
