Winston-Salem, NC -- Police have arrested a mother they say provided drugs and alcohol to minors at a large party.
Police said Betty Shults, 48, threw a party for her 19-year-old daughter and 400 other people, many of them were younger than 18.
On Monday, News 2 wanted to get both sides of the story, but when we went to Shults' house, she wouldn't talk to us.
News 2's Lauren Melvin did speak with Shults' neighbors, who said they feel for Shults because she's humiliated and she's not the one at fault. She was just letting her daughter have a party, and the kids brought their own drugs and alcohol.
However, police said that makes her just as guilty as they are.
Police knew there was a party at the house on Carver School Road because the city notified them that Shults' daughter had been denied a block party permit.
Tia Shults requested a Block Party Permit that lasted from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. from the city of Winston-Salem. The permit was denied because of the time of day and traffic on the street.
On Saturday, police went to the neighborhood to make sure traffic could get by and to tell Shults she could not allow any drug or alcohol violations.
Just after midnight, neighbors complained that marijuana was being used at the party.
When police went back to investigate, they said it looked like a concert. They told News 2 there were beer cans, bottles and evidence of drug use in Shults' yard. They also found a minor who needed medical assistance because he drank too much.
When police asked Shults if they could search her home, she said "no."
After police obtained a search warrant, they found more evidence of underage drinking and drug use inside the home. Investigators said there was also another minor who needed medical attention.
Sgt. John Gomez, with the Winston-Salem Police Department, told News 2 it doesn't matter whether Shults provided the alcohol because she allowed it in her home and didn't take action.
"Parents are responsible for children who come to their house.
If you're aware of something illegal happening under your roof and you allow it, it's a crime," said Gomez.
Gomez said if Shults had called the police when she knew kids were bringing alcohol and drugs to her house, she would not have been charged.
Officers arrested Betty Shults with multiple counts of Giving Alcohol to a Person Under 21, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Maintaining a Dwelling for the Purpose of Violating the Controlled Substances Act.
She was placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
Her daughter was cited with multiple violations of Aiding and Abetting Giving Alcohol to a Person Under 21 and Consuming Alcohol Under 21.
Police said there were also 13 party-goers charged with underage drinking, one party-goer was charged with DWI and three others are facing serious drug charges.
