Carey "C.J." Adams Jr., 34, shot his son, Jesse, and then shot himself around 10 p.m.

Authorities said Adams was on the phone with his son's mother at home on Wiley Gaskins Rd. before the shooting.

Adams and his son were taken to a Greenville hospital where Jesse died, and his father remains in critical condition.

Sheriff Neil Elks said the shooting was motivated by an ongoing domestic conflict with his son's mother. The couple had been separated for four months, and the mother had taken a restraining order against Adams in the past, the sheriff said.

Adams had several previous convictions that include Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Communicating Threats, Felony Breaking and Entering and Possession of a Firearm By a Felon, according to state records.
