MANTEO, N.C. -- An Ohio man charged with killing his on-and-off girlfriend in North Carolina remains in jail without bond after his first court appearance.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that 27-year-old Nathan Summerfield was in a Dare County courtroom on Tuesday. Judge Edgar Barnes read the charge and appointed an attorney.

He's scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10 for a grand jury hearing.

He's accused in the death of 33-year-old Lynn Jackenheimer of Ashland Ohio, who disappeared while on a July 4 vacation in Salvo with her two children and Summerfield. Her body was later discovered 25 miles from the beach house where they had stayed.

Summerfield returned to Ohio. He left the children with relatives.

U.S. marshals caught Summerfield last weekend in a motel room in Medina, Ohio.
