Greensboro, NC -- Police say a pre-existing condition caused a man to be transported to hospital Friday night after being arrested for shoplifting.

EMS transported Zenon San Martin Ramirez, 52, to Moses Cone  Hospital for treatment of an abrasion suffered during his struggle with police.

Doctors determined that Ramirez had dangerously low blood pressure at the time of his arrest. They believe Ramirez's pre-existing condition was aggravated during the incident.

Police say Ramirez is accused of stealing alcohol from the Food Lion on E. Market St.

An employee called police and another restrained the man while officers arrived on the scene.

When Ramirez began to resist arrest, officers were forced to get physical with him, but did not use any weapons, according to the police department.

As part of the department's policy, the Criminal Investigations Division and Professional Standards Division will investigate the incident.

The two officers have been placed on administrative duties until the investigation is complete.
