Greensboro, NC -- Could Thanksgiving be the latest casualty of the economy?
It may sound like a bizarre question.
But the holiday where we take one day to stop and give thanks isn't what it used to be.
It's supposed to be a day for family, for giving thanks, but more and more stores are choosing to open on Thanksgiving Day.
They include some locations of Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic clothing stores. Many K-mart stores are opening at 5am on Thanksgiving Day.
Some workers say they need the extra money, and stores need more shoppers buying. Not taking a Thanksgiving time-out, however could come at a cost.
Clinical psychologist, David Gutterman with LeBauer Behavioral Medicine said families run the risk of becoming more fragmented.
Yes, even shopping --- something you may enjoy --- may not be beneficial if it's not a connected family event.
"The more we're around healthy strong relationships that are modeled for us as we grow up hopefully those are the kinds of relationships we build ourselves as we develop our own families," said Gutterman.
Some stores are taking a stand when it comes to Thanksgiving.
Our local Sears store was open last Thanksgiving, but not this year. They'll be closed. The corporate office told employees to enjoy their families this Thanksgiving.
