Greensboro, NC -- A woman said she escaped the man who raped and beat her in Greensboro Sunday morning by faking her own death. Her story of survival surprised even Deana Joy from Crossroads Sexual Assault Response and Resource Cetner.

She said the key to this survival story was the woman accurately read her attacker.

"She was overpowered, and she knew it," said Joy. "So she had to come up with a plan B to get out of the situation alive."

Joy said fighting back is always the first course of action and how you do that depends on your circumstances, your location, who your attacker is and what kind of weapon they are using if any.

Crossroads Sexual Assault Response and Resource Center offers self defense classes for women. You can click here for information to classes and personal aid.

You can watch the attached video to learn some self defense moves if an attacker comes at your from the front and back. Martial arts master Monty Hendrix takes you through the steps.

Deana Joy said if someone can't get away from their attacker and is raped they should get immediate medical attention.

"Any time that passes, anything that is done, like showering, going to the bathroom, even drinking or eating can alter the evidence that can be taken during a rape kit assessment."

Joy said this is a lesson in not giving strangers the benefit of the doubt.

"As kids, we learn to be cautious. But we grow out of that. As adults, we should learn to trust people after they've given us a reason to, not before," said Joy.
