Greensboro, NC -- Greensboro police want to help neighbors spot crime in their communities and stop it before it happens.

They're starting the Citizens Police Academy in March. It will be a six-month program of 15 sessions between residents and police.

They will be the first and third Thursday of each month. Anyone interested can apply on their website.

Police will give students an overview of the police department and how law enforcement works. They will also teach them to better patrol their neighborhoods and have one-on-one demonstrations involving police tactics.

"We want to get citizens involved," said Capt. Wayne Scott. "I think it'll be a cross section of people already involved, probably community watch leaders or community leaders in general. But, I think we're going to tap that area of the population that wants to know more about law enforcement."

To apply to be in the program, applicants must be 18 years old or older, a resident of Greensboro, and they must agree to a background check.
