GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A community group raises money, collects donations and then gives it all back to the homeless. It's an incredible act of service and now they need your help.
Ashley Benton and Latoya Anderson are members of the Green Team Ministry. The group feeds the homeless every first, third and fourth Sunday at Center City Park in Greensboro. They also feed and care for the homeless every second Friday at the Public Library Downtown.
"I do it as a way to give back to the community. I just want to pay it forward," said Benton.
Benton talked about the misconception that the homeless are made up of only older adults. "It's older adults, it's kids, it's families. It's very heartbreaking, I usually cry every time."
Benton described the long lines of people they meet every time they go out to help the homeless. "The numbers can range between 75 and 150 people, sometimes 200."
"We need people to donate hygiene products in small quantities so we can fit them into a small bag. So that we can hand them out to the homeless," explained Anderson. "It makes me feel great to make a difference in someone's life."
The Green Team's goal is to make sure all the homeless have food to eat at least once a week. They need volunteers to help pass out care packages and food. They're accepting donations of hygiene products, blankets and coats for the homeless. You can also make a monetary contribution through their website's Paypal account.
