Lexington, NC -- Police chased a man across three counties after he stole an ambulance in Lexington.

The pursuit started around ten o'clock Sunday morning.

Police used stop strips to blow out the ambulance's tires and eventually bumped it off the road just inside Caswell county limits. Two highway patrol cars wrecked during the chase. The ambulance is now at Hopper's Wrecker service in Eden.

Authorities say a deer, which had been dead nearly a week, was strapped to the gurney in the back.

The suspect has been taken to Umstead in Raleigh for a psychological evaluation. Police have not released his name.
