More Bizarre Happenings For Man Suspected Of Stealing Ambulance, Transporting Dead Deer

Mac Ingraham    Created:  9/26/2005 6:06:52 PM  Updated: 9/27/2005 6:28:53 PM

Lexington, NC -- Police now think a man who stole a Davidson County ambulance and transported a dead deer inside it may have been a part of more unusual behavior over the weekend. That man led them on a chase that ended on Highway 700 in Caswell County when officers blew out the ambulance's tires and forced it off the road.

The more than three county chase ended with blown tires, scrapes and dents, but no injuries.

Investigators found the dead deer inside the ambulance.

Police think the man's odd behavior began the day before on Anna Lewis drive in Lexington.

Lieutenant Scott Nanney says officers saw the man with a wheelchair near the hospital.

?Actually he was in the wheelchair riding it in the middle of the road and intoxicated. So, that's when officers decided to take him into jail for four hours.?

Police say the man wasn't charged with anything in the wheelchair incident.

He was only taken to jail for his safety, until he was sober enough to leave.

Davidson County Emergency Services Leaders say they are reviewing procedures to see if any policy changes are necessary to prevent similar thefts of their ambulances from happening in the future.
