Winston-Salem, NC -- Another school district has approved a tobacco ban. The Davie County Board of Education approved a 100 percent tobacco-free policy this week. The ban means that tobacco use will be prohibited in Davie County Schools, even at football games, starting in August. Teachers in Davie County already were banned from using tobacco on school grounds or where students could see them. The new policy will prevent parents from smoking, dipping or chewing tobacco at school functions. Davie County is now the 65th school district out of 115 in North Carolina to approve a tobacco ban. Meanwhile, the NC Health And Wellness Trust Fund announced the awarding of $1.6 million to colleges and community colleges in the state.

The money is tobacco use prevention aand cessation grants.

These grants are part of the first state-funded effort to prevnet and reduce tobacco use among college-age youth.

The program also includes promotion of the new NC Tobacco Use Quitline, which is 1-800-QUIT-NOW, for 18 to 24 year olds.
