Gaston County, NC -- A Charlotte-area man said he did the most logical thing he could when robbing a bank earlier this month.
James Verone said he walked into the RBC Bank on New Hope Road and passed a note to the teller demanding $1. He took the money and sat on a sofa near the door, telling the clerk was going to wait for police.
Verone said he didn't rob the bank for monetary value, but rather for medical reasons. He said he doesn't have insurance and several medical issues.
Without a job, the 59-year-old thought jail was the best place he could go for medical care and a roof over his head.
Verone hopes for a three-year sentence so he will be old enough to collect social security when he gets released. He said he's already talked with a realtor about purchasing a condo in Myrtle Beach.
There could be one problem with Verone's plan. Since he only demanded $1, he was charged with larceny from a person, not bank robbery. A larceny conviction might have less jail time.
