Andy Sanchez
Burlington, NC-- The funeral for a 6-year-old boy who died when his mom's car was hit by a tractor-trailer will be Friday at 5pm.
Trooper Greg Ingram said Andy Sanchez died from injuries related to a crash that happened Monday night around 11:32 p.m. on I-40 west near exit 141.
Ingram said a preliminary investigation reveals that a tractor-trailer and a passenger car were both traveling west on I-40, when the semi merged into the lane of the car, causing the driver of the car to run off the road. The woman driving the car, Laura Sanchez, hit a fence and overturned.
Her six-year-old son, Andy, was ejected from the car. He was taken to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill where he later died. Investigators said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Troopers said Laura Sanchez was also injured in the crash and was treated at UNC Hospitals. Her 2-year-old daughter was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer kept going, according to Highway Patrol. Trooper Ingram said that it is possible the driver of the truck didn't realize he/she had hit another car, as they were changing lanes.
Laura Sanchez talked told us how her son loved basketball. He was starting first grade in a couple of weeks and looked forward to seeing his friends.
"He was a happy boy," shared Sanchez. "He liked to sing whatever was on the radio."
The two-year-old daughter was buckled in her car seat.
She survived the crash, but Sanchez said she doesn't understand why her brother didn't.
"Trying to get her through this. She keeps asking for her brother. It's hard. She's so little," stated Sanchez.
