Louisburg, NC-- The former sheriff of Franklin County has been indicted on charges of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from the office.
A grand jury handed up the indictment Tuesday charging Pat Green with two counts of embezzlement. A phone message left for Green wasn't immediately returned. Green was first elected sheriff in 2006 and won re-election last November. He resigned in January, one day before residents learned the State Bureau of Investigation was looking into missing funds at the sheriff's office.
Warrants charge that Green took $90,000 from a fund used for undercover drug investigations. They say he told SBI agents he was depressed and used the money to pay bills.
Earlier this month, county officials named former Sheriff Jerry Jones as Green's replacement.
