Another company will no longer do business with a Minnesota egg supplier. Target now refuses to use eggs from Sparboe farms after an undercover investigation showed unsanitary conditions and inhumane treatment of animals.
McDonald's has also promised to stop buying eggs from the Litchfield company.
When Mercy for Animals went undercover at several Sparboe Farms locations in Minnesota, Iowa, and Colorado, it had one goal in mind. Expose the conditions of factory farms that use confining cages.
The video shows hens barely able to move in cramped quarters and workers mistreating the animals, conditions that Mercy for Animals claims all stem from cage living.
The investigation prompted two companies, McDonalds and Target, to stop selling Sparboe eggs.
Today Mercy for Animals sent letters to both companies asking them to only buy cage free eggs. They believe large companies can make change happen.
Sparboe had little to say about McDonalds and Target's decision to stop buying their eggs.
President Beth Sparboe Schnell says their focus has been on the investigation and addressing areas of impovement within the company.
The company also plans to re-train workers and expand it's safety staff.
In addition to the undercover investigation, the FDA also sent a warning letter citing 13 violations.
Sparboe ays it's addressing those issues and that all eggs from its farms are safe to eat.
