Winston-Salem, NC-- One the Triad's most internationally known corporations is not leaving and isn't laying everyone off.

WFMY News 2 called Reynolds American (formerly RJ Reynolds) and asked about the rumor, which started based on a survey being conducted by the company. That's according to a viewer who contacted the station.

Maura Payne, spokesperson for the company, cleared things up.  Payne said the company is conducting a comprehensive first quarter review of programs, activities and organizational structures at Reynolds American (RAI), other RAI services and most of the departments at RJR tobacco company.

Basically, according to Payne, everything associated with the company and every position is being looked at for modifications or potential elimination.

In terms of layoffs, Payne admitted that layoffs are expected when all is said and done. She added, that the survey has already started and salaried employees are eligible to take part. Questions for those workers surround their interest in severance in exchange for job elimination.

Analysis for production workers, who are hourly workers, is being finalized and will begin next month.

Although layoffs are imminent, Payne said they don't have a number yet.

Payne stressed that Reynolds American is not looking to leave Winston-Salem or shut down. She said plans are to keep all manufacturing is based in Winston-Salem and they're looking at ways to strengthen business.
