Greensboro, NC -- You're going to pay more for energy, and the change is coming next week.
The North Carolina Utilities Commission approved Duke Energy's rate increase request.
That means that beginning February 1. You'll pay 7.2% more for your electric bill.
If you pay an average $100 per month, it will cost you $7.20 more per month or $86.40 more per year.
Duke Energy requested the increase last year to pay for upgrades it already made and its employee benefits.
Duke energy originally wanted an 18% increase, then dropped it down to 12% before settling on 7.2% after many of you complained.
State Attorney General Roy Cooper also spoke out against the increase.
"I am disappointed the Commission allowed Duke's rate increase for consumers," said Cooper. "We intend to review the opinion and look at available options."
