Why Wendover Is Still Gridlocked

Greensboro, NC -- Tuesday, traffic was cut to one lane on Wendover Avenue eastbound near Cridland in Greensboro.

The city news release blamed it on a busted water main. But then police told us the lanes were back open, when clearly there was still a huge hole in the road.  And it seemed no one could tell us when the work would be finished.

We now know this all started on Tuesday, when a drilling contractor hit a water line, not a water main.

The Water Resources Department shut down a couple lanes to fix the line.

They put a temporary patch on the hole in the road. Wednesday, the field operations department picked things up and put a permanent fix on that hole.

But they decided, "while we're here, let's go ahead and level the road where it's started to sink."

That's why the lanes were closed again Thursday and will be again Friday morning.

The confusion started after the first crew patched the road. The city sent a news release announcing the work was done.
But the second crew still had to come out and fix the road permanently.

If they had just stopped after fixing the original hole, Mike Mabe with Greensboro's Field Operations Division says the road would have been open Thursday morning.
