Investigators say Lauritha McGhaney lost control of her bus after she tried to recover a cigarette she was smoking that fell onto the bus floorboard. She was charged with reckless driving, no seatbelt, and smoking on a school bus.

The incident happened back on March 8, shortly after 4:00 p.m. The bus swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic and crossed back into the center median before colliding with a compact car on Alice Drive.

The driver of the compact car and a passenger were taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center. They were eventually released and are undergoing physical therapy due to injuries sustained in the accident.

McGhaney is scheduled to appear at municipal court on May 3.
