Winston-Salem, NC -- Police in Winston-Salem are investigating an accident involving a mom and her small child who were both hit by the same car.
Emergency workers were dispatched to a pedestrian hit call Friday night around 9:49pm in the 1600 block of Thurmond Street. Officers found a mother and her 15 month old daughter both injured in the roadway.
Police said Teneca Scales was pushing her daughter, who was in a stroller across Thurmond St when a car hit them.
News 2 talked to Warren Portis, who witnessed the crash. Teneca Scales was leaving Portis' house to go home. She was hit by a car while crossing the street.
"The moment of impact was right there and she landed down here. The speed he had to be going was 55 to 60", said Portis.
Winston- Salem Police said Scales and her daughter were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Doctors said Scales injuries are serious but she is in fair condition. The daughter's injuries are considered critical.
The driver was identified as the Burl Jones, Jr. of Kernersville. Police said he remain on the scene after hitting the two.
Winston-Salem Police are still investigating the accident.
Neighbors told News 2's Liz Crawford that thee have been pedestrian fatalities in the past right along Thurmond Street. There's a hill in the road that makes for a blind spot exactly where Teneca Scales and her baby were hit on Friday night.
Tilda Shannon has lived there over fifty years. On Saturday, she was gathering signatures for a petition calling for change.
Shannon said, "Putting more stop signs, or street lights or speed bumps, whatever it takes to make our neighborhood safe."
Shannon wants to take her petition to Winston- Salem City Council. News 2 spoke with Council Member, James Taylor. Taylor said Council would be happy to move forward with the petition. However, it does require 3/4 of the neighborhood signatures and a survey by the Department of Transportation.
