Chapel Hill, NC-- Police in Chapel Hill are trying to figure out who shot a woman who was riding in a car.

Investigators told WRAL the woman was shot in the neck Wednesday as the car she was riding in was traveling on Jones Ferry Road southwest of Carrboro.

The car had crossed the intersection of Jones Ferry and Bowden roads when something drew the occupants' attention to the driver's side, Maj. Charles Blackwood of the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. Then, a small-caliber bullet hit the unidentified passenger behind her ear.

The area is wooded, and deputies were trying to determine where the shot came from, Blackwood said.

Paramedics took the woman to a nearby hospital. Her condition was unknown, but Blackwood said her injuries weren't life-threatening.
