Washington, D.C. -- President Barack Obama says he won't apologize to Mitt Romney over an aide's comment about the Republican presidential candidate's time at Bain Capital.

Romney demanded an apology last week after an Obama campaign adviser said Romney could face a felony charge if he made false filings to a government regulator about how long he was in charge of the firm.

In an interview taped yesterday with WAVY-TV in Virginia, Obama said, "We will not apologize."

The Obama campaign is raising questions about whether Romney was at the helm of the private equity firm he founded longer than he has said, during a period when it sent jobs overseas. Romney says he had no active role in Bain once he became head of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in early 1999.

On CNN's "State of the Union," Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie accused the Obama campaign of saying or doing "anything to keep the highest office in the land, even if it means demeaning the highest office in the land."

He said Romney did five interviews with cable and network news shows Friday so people would know "he's not a felon."
