Lumberton, NC-- A Lumberton police officer was shot Tuesday and later died while trying to apprehend a suspect.
Major Tommy Barnes told WBTW the shooting happened around 11:00 a.m. at a gas station on North Fayetteville Road.
Investigators confirm the officer was off-duty and was trying to serve an arrest warrant at the gas station. Investigators say the officer saw the wanted man in the parking lot of a Shell station . They said he waited for another officer before approaching the suspect's car.
As the men walked up, authorities say the suspect began shooting, and the off-duty officer was struck several times. He died a short time later at the hospital.
His name has not been released.
Investigators say the other officer held the shooter at gunpoint until more officers arrived. Officials have not released the name of the suspect or what crime he was wanted for.
