23-Weeks Later A Greensboro Retired Firefighter Fights For Life

Greensboro, NC -- Larry "Butch" Cummings is a retired Greensboro firefighter, who was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer 2 years ago.

"Sometimes, I feel a little frightened but i learn how to fight scared," said Larry "Butch" Cummings.

After 30 years as a firefighter, Cummings is used to putting himself last.

"We are so used to him running in and saving other lives and they are coming to rescue him," said Cynthia Cummings.

Right before, the Cummings' 25th wedding anniversary Butch was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. 

"I can remember, we were holding hands and we got to go forward with the help of the Lord," said Cynthia.

"We have to make up in our mind...who's report are we going to believe," said Butch.

Cummings told News 2's Tony Smith, he still fighting 23 weeks later after doctors sent him home, without hope for a cure. 

The Cummings family has taken on some costly expenses.

If you would like to help Butch fight, the Greensboro Fire Department is hosting a fundraiser.

When: August 4th from 11 am to 2 pm.

Where: Greensboro Fire Station #7, 1064 Gatewood Ave., Greensboro, NC.

Cost: For $5 you can help Butch and enjoy two hotdogs, chips and a drink.

There is also a silent auction going on now until August 3rd. See the attached flyer for more details.

All money will go to help Butch's medical expenses.

As of July 28th, Fire Captain Tim Gibbs said he will keep a shaved head until a cure if found for Larry "Butch" Cummings' rare blood cancer.
