Tuscon, Ariz. -- The man accused of opening fire in a grocery store parking lot last January could soon strike a plea.

According to some reports, Jared Loughner plans to plead guilty to 49 federal charges on Tuesday. The plea could get him life in prison.

A court-appointed psychiatrist will testify Tuesday that Loughner is competent to enter the plea.

Investigators say Loughner killed six people in a shooting last year at a meet-and-greet for then-Rep. Gabby Giffords. Thirteen people, including Giffords, were hurt.

Giffords resigned from Congress to focus on her recovery.
