(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Federal authorities accuse the co-owner of a Winston-Salem nonprofit substance abuse and mental health treatment center of trafficking large amounts of heroin across the country and from Mexico.
An arrest warrant filed in U.S. District Court says 41-year-old James O'Brien Lackard was arrested Aug. 8 for conspiracy to distribute 1 kilogram or more of heroin.
Documents filed with the N.C. Secretary of State show Lackard and his wife started Ivy House Center for Self-Sufficiency as a nonprofit in February 2007. Ivy House works exclusively with the criminal justice system in getting substance abuse and mental health treatment for defendants. It also provides treatment for people charged with driving while impaired.
James Lackard is in federal custody. A telephone listing for his attorney wasn't available Wednesday.
