Greensboro, NC -- He delayed going to college, entering the freshman class at North Carolina A & T State University the second semester of last year.

This was his year to attend all the first of the year activities for freshman but what should have been a joyous time turned tragic for 21-year old Jawuan Trotter.

Friends say he appeared faint and weak then he collapsed at an event Friday night in the Memorial Student Union.

Police performed CPR but Trotter later died at the hospital.

"There were no signs that anything was wrong, he just looked full of life, and that's how he looked every single day. He was just full of life, meeting people, talking to people, and everybody loved him because of how sweet of a person he was." says Jeffrey Lewis.

Jeffrey Lewis was with Jawuan Trotter on the last night of his life.

"I had left for like 30 minutes and within those 30 minutes, I guess that was when everything took place and the only time I had seen him again was when they took him out on the stretcher. So that was the last time I had seen him."

Plans made for Saturday were canceled. Instead of being with his friend, Jeffrey spent the afternoon with a school counselor.

"We believe in immediacy. Often when people seek services immediately, it helps in the end," said Dr. Vivian Barnette, Director, Counseling Services, NC A&T State University.

"After I had broken down today, when I came in and talked to her she helped me laugh, and helped me deal with the situation," said Lewis.

"So they don't suffer a long time or so they don't suffer in silence, and to let them know, there are other people who are also suffering or concerned or may have those same fears," said Barnette.

"I'm going to miss that the most, just seeing the smile on his face and him hugging me. I'm going to miss that a lot," said Lewis.

Lewis says he'll miss the man who is more like a brother than a friend.

"He uplifted people and he left such an impression on people that just knowing him for an hour, you didn't forget him. His life might have been short but it's a life that meant a lot to everybody," said Lewis.

Officials say there will be a memorial for Jawuan in the coming weeks.

Jeffrey says he plans to speak in remembrance of his friend.

There is still no word on what caused Jawuan to collapse and die. Counselors will be available on campus Sunday from 2 to 5 for students who need them.
