Randleman, NC -- Jamey Lee Ashley has been arrested and charged in a Monday shooting that put two Randolph County Sheriff's Deputies in hospitals.
Ashley is charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder, 2 counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The shooting happened around 2:30pm at the 220 South, Highway 311 exit. Deputies stopped the car after running the tag and realizing the driver was wanted for outstanding warrants in Guilford and Randolph Counties. Ashley then shot the two deputies and ran into the woods.
News 2 still does not have the names of the deputies that were shot. We did learn the deputy transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has more serious injuries.
The second deputy is at UNC Hospitals with a gunshot in the upper shoulder area.
Deputies told News 2's Liz Crawford that neither one of the deputies has life-threatening injuries.
About a dozen law enforcement agencies joined the manhunt before arresting the suspect one mile from the scene of the shooting.
Ashley was taken into custody behind a barn off Heath Dairy Rd near Dairy Breeze Rd. around 6:30 p.m. A woman's dog barking alerted her to something and she called the sheriff's office.
Investigators said Ashley was arrested without resistance.
Chief Deputy Col. Fred Rutledge told News 2 that one of the deputies was definitely wearing a bulletproof vest. He wasn't sure if the other, who was in plain clothing, was wearing one. The Sheriff said he does issue a vest to everyone in the department, but it's up to them to wear it.
He's been charged with two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, two counts of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Ashley was placed in the Randolph County Jail under a $5.25 million bond. He was also served with multiple warrants from Guilford County to go along with the charges from the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff's office expects there to be more charges against Ashley.
