Asheboro, NC -- The two deputies who were shot during a traffic stop Monday afternoon in Randleman are expected to make full recoveries.
Sheriff Maynard Reid made that announcement Tuesday morning when he identified the two wounded officers as 33-year-old Detective John Chriscoe and 38-year-old Deputy Edward Slafky. Chriscoe is a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's department, while Slafky has worked there for seven years.
Investigators say that on Monday afternoon, Det. Chriscoe spotted a car near where highways 311 and 220 meet that officers thought was involved with some breaking and entering cases. They found Ashley inside it, who they were also looking for in association with some breaking and enterings.
According to the Sheriff's Office, at some point after Slafky arrived to back up Chriscoe, Ashley started shooting with a .40 caliber Glock. One deputy was able to fire back, investigators say, but he missed Ashley.
During a first appearance Tuesday, a judge maintained Ashley's $5.2 million bond. The list of charges against Ashley includes two counts of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, breaking and entering and more.
The two women who were in the car with Ashley were also behind bars Tuesday.
Shaina Perdue, 24, and Amanda Swaney, 25, both had outstanding warrants against them related to some old breaking and entering charges. There were no charges filed against them Tuesday directly tied to Monday's shooting, but sheriff's investigators say that is a possibility.
Detectives say it's also possible that all three worked together on some breaking and enterings. But they wouldn't say more than that because there's a chance there are even more people out there they are looking for.
