(Burlington, NC)  --  NC Highway Patrol said a pregnant woman was killed in a wreck Sunday night while on her way to the hospital.

According to Trooper Greg Ingram, Brian and Megan Riggans, of Staley, were traveling east on Greensboro Chapel Hill Road when their Jeep hydroplaned, ran off the side of the road and collided with a tree.

Ingram said the crash happened around 9:56pm Sunday. Megan Riggans was in labor and the couple was driving to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for delivery of the child. Megan died at the scene.

Investigators were told she was unconscious when crews arrived. EMS took her to Alamance Regional Medical Center where she delivered a baby boy. Doctors at the hospital later  pronounced Megan Riggans dead.

The infant was transferred to UNC Hospitals, Trooper Ingram said.

The baby's father who was driving the Jeep, Brian Riggans was taken to UNC Hospitals from the scene to be treated for his injuries from the collision.
