Mekaeel Byrd Charged With DWI In High Point Crashes

(High Point, NC)  -- A multiple car collision early Tuesday morning resulted in a three-mile stretch of Highway 311 being closed for several hours.

High Point Police said they were called around 4:40am to US 311 near the Skeet Club bridge in reference to a crash involving a car driven by Mekaeel Byrd, 25 of High Point. According to Police, Byrd was traveling south on US 311 at a high rate of speed when he hit a SUV operated by Robert Dean Halter, 57 of Kernersville.

Officers said this caused a chain of collision with there other cars. 

After the impact of the collision police said Halter lost control, of his car, crossed the median and overturned in the northbound lanes of US 311. Halter's car was then hit by a minivan driven by Richard O'Neal who was traveling north on US 311. This caused O'Neal's van to flip on its top. Police said another car driven by Adam Craig, 28 who was traveling north on US 311 also hit Craig's vehicle.

After their investigation, Byrd was charged with DWI, Felony Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Failing to Reduce Speed and a Seatbelt Violation. Byrd was treated and released at High Point Regional Hospital for a head injury from the crash. 

The other drivers: Police said Halter suffered multiple fractures to his left hand and foot and lacerations to his face and was taken to Wake Forest Baptist. O'Neal and Craig suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
