Greensboro, NC - We tend to hear more of the bad news when it comes to schools and education. But this time, we're sharing something good.
On Thursday evening, 16 schools in Guilford County will be awarded for outstanding achievement at the 12th annual Celebration of Excellence event and the prize money is huge. Each school will be awarded $9,600, supported by Guilford County Schools and the Businesses for Excellence in Education.
Along with the 16 schools being honored Thursday, the district as a whole is celebrating its own success.
The number of schools achieving the highest state recognition as an Honor of School of Excellence has increased from 14 to 19. Guilford County Schools also had impressive number of schools of distinction with 27 this past school year. And the graduation rate also increased to a record 84.5 percent with six schools achieving a perfect, 100 percent graduation rate.
The schools being honored Thursday include 9 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 4 high schools.
Elementary - Claxton, Colfax, Falkener, General Greene, Jefferson, Lindley, McLeansville, Montlieu and Wiley Elementary Schools.
Middle - Mendenhall, Northern and Southern Middle Schools.
High - Smith, Southeast, Western and the Middle College at GTCC High Point.
