Greensboro, NC -- A raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus Tuesday, making it the 21st confirmed case in Guilford County, according to the Department of Public Health.

The department says the raccoon came in contact with one dog.

North Carolina law requires all indoor and outdoor domestic pets to get their rabies vaccinations. Pets without current vaccinations that come in contact with rabid animals have to be euthanized or confined for at least six months, at the owner's expense, at a veterinary center.

Guilford County Animal Control is still conducting rabies clinics to help protect you and your pets.

The shots cost $5.00 and last for an entire year.

Here are the upcoming clinics:

Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Pleasant Garden Town Hall, 4920 Alliance Church Rd. 

Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m.-1.p.m.: Oak Ridge Town Park, 6231 Lisa Dr.

And the health department is asking the public to report stray animals, or animals acting strangely, to Animal Control by calling (336) 641-5990 in Greensboro or (336) 883-3224 in High Point.

If you are bitten by a rabid animal, wash the area immediately with soap and water, get to a doctor immediately and report the bite to an Animal Control officer.
