Kill Devil Hills, NC -- Grant Gilmore has been on the Outer Banks since Saturday and has seen all stages of the storm: before, during, and after.

On the night before Halloween, a bar on Kill Devil Hills, Chilli Peppers, held a Halloween party. Residents still came out to a local bar, just as they would had a hurricane not come through.

News 2 crews talked to Terry Askew before the storm and checked back in with her to hear how she weathered the storm. Askew said, "the water was pounding, we were seeing 20-30 footers out there breaking in the spray and the wind." Askew said the national weather center said weather reports estimated wind gusts in Kitty Hawk reached 67 mile an hour gusts. Her home was protected from the dunes, until Sandy's wind and rain washed them away as well. "By 4:30 in the morning, the dune was gone and thats why the waves were actually breaking on the house. We heard this huge crash and thats when our door broke in, and then we just watched everything wash away."

Askew said they're trying to push the sand back in place and they plan to re-build.
