Greensboro, NC - A man taken into police custody for shoplifting on Friday has died.

Police said Zenon San Martin Ramirez, 52, died at 3:35am Monday morning at Moses Cone Hospital after he was unable to recover from surgery. The cause of the death is undetermined. 

Ramirez was taken to the hospital to treat an injury he sustained while resisting arrest for shoplifting at a Food Lion on Market St.; an autopsy report is pending from the Medical Examiner.

No weapons were used in last Friday's struggle, but because Ramirez was uncooperative, police had to get physical to restrain him. When he was taken to the hospital for an abrasion on his face, doctors noted that Ramirez had dangerously low blood pressure.

Doctors told police that while they were performing surgery on Ramirez that they learned he was suffering from a pre-existing medical condition.

The State Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating this case. Both officers involved are currently on administrative duty, which is department protocol, until the investigation is finished.
