Sampson County, NC -- The State Bureau of Investigation says two Sampson County prison guards are now the focus of a criminal investigation at the county jail, according to the Associated Press.
The investigation started after the SBI received complaints from inmates who said they were forced to rub habanero sauce on their genitals.
Pamela Walker, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, said Friday that SBI agents were investigating the officers.
Walker said the agents first conferred with a local prosecutor about possible criminal charges.
The prison's warden and another worker were placed on paid leave earlier this month after six inmates said they were forced to perform humiliating acts to entertain the guards.
The inmates claim they were forced to strip naked, slather hot sauce on their private parts and pretend to have sex.
The Associated Press is also reporting that a third staff member resigned in the case.
