Danbury, NC -- The tragedy in Newtown, Conn., has led to a new request for increased school security in Stokes County.
At Wednesday night's county commissioner meeting, the chairman of the Stokes Co. Board of Education asked for up to $350,000 to put a deputy or officer at every campus in the county until the end of the current school year.
The Board of Education chairman, Michael Rogers, told WFMY News 2 the extra money is needed to ensure an officer could be on standby at every school. The current budget doesn't allow for that, and Rogers said he wants to do his best to keep response times in emergencies as short as possible.
Getting officers on each campus through the end of the school year would give the school board time to reevaluate its safety plans and have all the schools covered for an emergency that might happen in the meantime.
Rogers spoke during the public comments section of the commissioners' meeting because the agenda was set before he had finalized his proposal. The commissioners didn't take any action. But they and the Board of Education will re-visit the issue at their meetings in January.
