Greensboro/High Point, NC-- Thursday city crews in High Point got themselves and the roads ready for more winter weather.
It was a scene repeated in cities across the Triad and around the state, as NC DOT crews prepared major thoroughfares for snow or ice.
What exactly are they doing? They are spraying a brine mixture, which is salt water that has to be put down hours in advance of a snow or ice event.
The water in the brine mixture evaporates, leaving a thin layer of salt residue on the road to prevent sleet/snow from bonding to the pavement.
If the precipitation is light enough, the brine can melt it completely.
