Greensboro, NC -- The Guilford County Board of Education voted unanimously to demolish the former Gibsonville Elementary School, according to the News & Record.
The 10-0 vote came after midnight in last week's board meeting.
The school system will hire a demolition company to oversee the project through an informal bidding process.
Robert Melton, facilities director for Guilford County Schools, cited safety concerns as a reason to destroy the building, which has been vacant since 2006.
Melton says the demolition project will take three to six months to complete and should cost less than $300,000.
Members of the Gibsonville community have been working to restore the school, which opened in the 1920s, for use as an historic building in Guilford County.
