North Carolina ranked fifth in the nation for the greatest number of firearms reported stolen or lost to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) in 2012, according to a report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
NC ranked below Texas, Georgia, Florida and California, respectively.
The total number of firearms reported as lost or stolen in North Carolina was 9,320. About 96 percent - 8,940 firearms - of that total were stolen. The remaining four percent - 380 - were reported as lost.
The NCIC reported a total of 190,342 firearms lost or stolen in 2012; the amount of stolen firearms also accounted for 96 percent of the total for the country.
