Third, Fourth Cases Of Rabies Reported In Guilford County This Year

Guilford County, NC -- The Guilford County Department of Public Health is alerting residents that a raccoon found on Poe Street in Greensboro tested positive for the rabies virus.

This is the third case of rabies in Guilford County this year. The rabid raccoon had contact with one dog.

They also found a raccoon on Sherrilwood Dr. in southeast Guilford County on Sunday, April 12. It tested positive for the rabies virus today, Tuesday, April 14. This is the fourth case of rabies in Guilford County this year. The rabid raccoon had contact with one unvaccinated cat.

North Carolina law requires that all domestic pets (dogs and cats) ages 4 months and older be vaccinated against rabies and that their vaccinations are kept current.

This law still applies even if pets are exclusively kept indoors. Barnyard pets such as goats, horses and cows should also be vaccinated against rabies for their protection against this deadly virus.

The following opportunities are available to vaccinate your pets against the rabies virus:

June 6, 2009, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Southwoods Animal Hospital, 3005 Randleman Road, Greensboro, NC 27406. Southwoods Animal Hospital is sponsoring this clinic. Rabies vaccines will be $10.00 each and will protect your pet for three calendar years. Micro chipping will be available for $26.00-cash only.

June 13, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Jamestown Fire Station, 301 E. Main Street, Jamestown, NC 27282. United Animal Coalition (UAC) will sponsor this event. Micro chipping will be
available for $15.00.

July 11, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Summerfield Fire Department, 7400 Summerfield Road, Summerfield, NC 27358. Rabies vaccines will be $5.00 each and protect your pet for one
calendar year. Micro chipping will be available for $15.00.

August 8, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Gander Mountain, 2223 Vanstory Street, Greensboro, NC 27403. UAC will sponsor this event. Micro chipping will be available for $15.00.

September 5, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Fire District Station #28, 6619 NC 61 North, Gibsonville, NC 27249. Rabies vaccines will be $5.00 each and protect your pet for one calendar year. Micro chipping will be available for $15.00.

October 10, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Pleasant Garden Town Hall, 4920 Alliance Church Road, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313. Southwoods Animal Hospital will sponsor this clinic. Rabies vaccines will cost $10.00 each and will protect the pet for three calendar years. Micro chipping will be available for $26.00-cash only.

For the safety of both pets and humans, dogs must be leased and cats must be in carriers at these clinics.
