Burlington, NC -- Generous donations from the community have made Scouting For Food a big success.
Boy Scouts dropped off 240,000 Lowes Food bags at houses from Boone to Burlington a few weeks ago and picked them up a week later when they were filled with food donations.
So far more than 141,000 pounds of food have been collected with some donations still coming in.
Loaves and Fishes in Burlington is one of the locations that received the donations. Executive Director Brenda Allen said they are expecting to have more than 20,000 pounds of food at their facility alone from Scouting for Food. They also received cash donations that was used to buy some of the food.
While the shelves and tables are filled at the food pantry now, it goes quickly. Loaves and Fishes serves more than 7,000 people a month and provides them with enough food for 30 days. There is a year-round need for donations.
Gavin Koonts, one of the boy scouts who participated in the food drive, along with his troop leader, Dave Parker, spoke about their experience with Scouting for Food on the Good Morning Show Wednesday.
