High Point, NC -- Summer is right around the corner and kids are excited to be out of school.

There are things you can do as a parent to prevent brain drain in the kids over the summer.

Rhonda Copeland, the principal at Fairview Elementary School, recommended some activities.

She said having the kids keep a journal that mom and dad respond to works on reading and writing skills.

She also recommends taking advantage of summer programs at your local public library.

"Research tells you that if a child does not read at least six books there is a good chance that they will lose some of the ground that they've made throughout the school year," said Copeland.

As for keeping up with math skills, Copeland recommends having the kids get involved with making recipes. They can do the math to double or cut recipes in half.
