Triad, NC - Robin Roberts is one of the countries most recognizable TV news anchors, and this recognition has resulted in a big rise in people registering to be Bone Marrow Donors.
Following Roberts announcement last week, within 24 hours, 3,600 people had registered to be potential donors with Be The Match. In a normal day, Be The Match sees two to three hundred registrants.
Bone Marrow Donation have become much easier than in years past. Today, bone marrow donors go through a similar process to those who donate blood.
Blood is taken from one arm, placed through a machine, and then inserted back in the patients other arm.
The American Red Cross is hoping the rise in bone marrow donors will also raise awareness for the constant need for blood.
Onle five percent of American's donate blood, and more than 38,000 blood donations are needed everyday.
As a result, the five percent of American's who do donate are carrying a heavy burden supplying patients across the United States with blood.
