Greensboro, NC - In Greensboro, seven pedestrians were killed in 2010 and 130 injured due to collisions with cars, and the Greensboro Police Department are trying to lower this number by focusing on pedestrian safety throughout the month of July.
Peggy Holland, with the Greensboro Department of Transportation, told News 2 that one of the most important things to do before crossing the street is push the crosswalk button.
Holland said the one thing people may not know is that when you press the button, the light will re-calibrate and give you more time to get safely across the street.
Officer Schneider of the Greensboro Police Department told News 2 another place pedestrians and drivers should be very careful is parking lots.
Officer Schneider said accidents between cars and pedestrians happen frequently in parking lots, and to help prevent this, follow the lanes of traffic if you are driving, and stay aware of your surroundings while you are walking into a store.
